President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to victims of flash foods, rainstorm, windstorm and fire incidents across the country.
The president gave the directive after being briefed by NEMA of the magnitude of the damage suffered due to the heavy rainfall in the country.
Buhari also expressed sympathy with the people over the loss of lives and properties.
Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media & Publicity to the president said, “In order to ameliorate the negative effects of these natural and in some cases, avoidable disasters, the President has directed NEMA to immediately provide relief assistance to the affected persons and communities in all the geo-political zones of the country.”
Buhari also tasked Nigerians to heed early warning signs and instructions given by relevant agencies to further guide against and prevent loss of lives to natural occurrence.
“It is important that our people listen and immediately comply with early-warning alerts and forecast by government bodies in order to save lives and property from wanton destruction. As the saying goes, ‘a stitch in time saves nine,” he added.
